Vegan Prenatal Vitamins

Friend of the blog Melissa asked:

“Hi. Hope you had a good weekend. I have a question I was hoping you could help me with. I need to start taking a prenatal vitamin (I’m not pregnant yet) but all the prenatals I find in the chain pharmacys have gelatin and fish in them. Do you know of a company that makes a vegan one? The pharmacy said DHEA comes from fish. There has to be a plant source this right? Well. Any info you have would be great!!!!”

Any info you have would be great! Thanks!!

I use Deva or Nuique brands DHA and EPA. I learned a while ago in grad school about algae sources of omega 3. Eating algae is the way fish get their own omega 3. They are much more expensive than fish oil but is a more reliable source and, of course vegan. I take Deva D2 and B12 but don’t need a prenatal myself. I love the nutrition advice in Vegan for Life by Ginny Messina and Jack Norris.
