Vegan MOFO: J is for Juicing

The documentary that has had the biggest impact on me this year was Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead.  I grew up with a dad that would juice any fruit or vegetable and he would have us try all his creations. Quite frankly I could never stand vegetable juice but after watching the stories of the people in this documentary I couldn’t wait to get a juicer.

After seeing it I told everyone possible about it. At my work a handful of people went out and bought juicers and begin to reboot.  Within the first week of juicing their skin color looked healthier, they had more energy than they had prior and they were shedding pounds. Many of them were feeling so good that they began asking me about a vegan diet which was the perfect opportunity to get them to watch Forks Over Knives. I have learned that I can’t always convince people it’s wrong to harm animals but that they will often listen when it deals with bettering their health.

We went and bought a juicer. The fancy one that was in the film was out of our budget so we purchased the Jack LaLanne model that was less than $100 (plus if you buy the package at Costco you get a really cool juicing book.) We love it. After experimenting I am actually able to drink vegetables as long as I balance it out with enough fruit like oranges and apples. Even kale which I really don’t care for.

We started out with shots and are now drinking 16 oz or more at a time. It may be psychosomatic but I am feeling much healthier. My sinuses have cleared up, I don’t feel as tired all the time and I am sleeping more soundly. I am not going to go 60 days and live only on juice but it has become part of my and my hubby agrees.

Do you enjoy juicing? What’s your favorite recipe?

I loooove fresh juice! I’d like to hear how the Jack LaLanne holds up for you with regular use.

    • My friend as a Jack LaLanne (an older model) that she has been using for 6 years so I am keeping my fingers crossed. If we get to the point where we are doing it multiple times aday I might invest in a better one.

I also bought a juicer after watching the movie about a week ago! I found a used Breville from a neighbor through our local listserv, and plan on juicing a few days a week. I am just using it supplementary at this point, to get more fruits and veggies in, but maybe eventually I will do a juice fast for a few days. Made a simple carrot apple juice yesterday and it was delish!
