12 Days Give Away – Day 5

Alton Brown is notorious for his dislike of single purpose kitchen utensils.  There are a couple that he’ll allow into his kitchen but most are verboten.   I found only one recipe of his that used tofu, and he recommends balancing canned tomatoes on the brick for an hour (FYI – The recipe is not vegan). With all due respect Mr. Brown, I bow to your superior culinary knowledge, balancing anything on a brick of tofu for an hour is quite a feat. I say that as some one who has tried many, many times.

Being an omnivore Mr Brown probably doesn’t eat enough tofu to fully appreciate all the subtle nuances that a properly pressed block a tofu presents the chef or how it feels on the palate.  However if he knew there is a way to perfectly press tofu and do so in less, much less, than an hour, he might be persuaded to add today’s gift to his kitchen.

We first reviewed the E-Z Tofu Press last April and I’ve used it regularly to not crush bricks tofu since then.  Todays lucky reader will receive their very own E-Z Tofu Press.  For those who aren’t as lucky today, you can buy an E-Z Tofu Press for the nice vegans on your holiday list here.

EZ Tofu Press 10-2013 small

Let’s be clear this isn’t a ‘contest’.  We’re giving away gifts to our friends.  However the limit quantities available gifts means we need to make some choices.   If you want to receive a gift, please leave a comment on the Don’t Fear the Vegan blog post for that day.  Commenting on Facebook doesn’t count.  Around midnight Pacific time the day after a post, a  recipient will be randomly chosen from the comments section.  We will reveal the gift recipients in individual posts the following day in a new post, a reply in the comments and a fair attempt at emailing.  The giftee will have 48 hours to contact us from the time of post, otherwise we will choose another lucky reader will be chosen who then has 48 hours to get back to us, and so on…. We have learned from past give aways that it is sometimes very difficult to get a hold of folks.  Lastly we can only afford to ship within the United States.  Sorry the rest of the world.

  3. Deanne O'Donnell says:

OMG! I’ve been wanting one of these for so long. I don’t eat alot of tofu because I can never get it the right texture, this would certainly help me get all that moisture out and finally get the right texture. Great gift!!

    • Lea says:

Hey Deanne, one tip you may have already tried for the texture would be to freeze your tofu in ziploc baggies once you’ve drained and cubed it. WHen you defrost it you can squeeze the hell out of it with your hands while it’s still in the baggie, to get the rest of the water out, and it’s much firmer and won’t mush. We also have only done this with Extra Firm tofu. Works like a charm though. 🙂

I would like to win this so I could fully appreciate all the subtle nuances that a properly pressed block a tofu presents the chef and how it feels on the palate!! My brick is just not doing it.

Balancing anything on tofu to press it never works for me! I’d love this gadget!

  11. Rebecca says:

We need one of these! We usually use our cast iron skillet, but that makes for some lopsided tofu!

  12. Jannifer says:

Once I was using my small saucepan as part of the apparatus to press tofu. It now has a bent rim from hitting the floor when the tofu went wonky on one side! I would use this press all the time.

oh my gosh! we’ve been looking for a tofu pies for so long, but nobody around here sells one. it looks pretty awesome!

  14. Melissa says:

Being on opposing schedules as my husband makes it really hard to choose easy dinners after long hours of work. This would help to cut prep time and get food into our bellies quicker. I’d use it often.

I need a tofu press. This on looks awesome!

I eat tofu enough that this would be used every day! Awesome!

I think you’ve persuaded me that I need one of these!

  20. Kathy says:

Definitely need a tofu press. I am still wasting paper towels squeezing it between two cast iron pans!

  21. Tamara says:

I have wanted one of these so badly since I first saw you mention it last spring. I do manage “well enough” with my cast iron skillet. I adore tofu…in all it’s variety of textures. It’s hard to fathom that there was a time I was afraid of it…lol.

  22. Marie Coria says:

If I don’t win this – Can you give me ideas how the heck to get all the moister out? …without paper towels, course!

  23. megan says:

I hav wanted one these for years! I never cook tofu because I feel that it’s too overwelming without proper utensils.

  24. Amy says:

Ahh! I would love one of these! I was just looking at buying on last week..I’m on a homemade tofu kick 😉

  25. Liz says:

I would love this! I love tofu! I am too impatient to wait that long for tofu to drain, and it is always such a hassle. I eat out to often; this might encourage me to stay home and eat more tofu!
