Over the years I have eaten prepared fancy raw meals at restaurants which I have consistently enjoyed. I have made a few simplistic recipes that I go back to over and over again because they are oh so tasty. I have also read numerous “how to” raw recipe books and walk away feeling overwhelmed, preached at and uninspired. This sums up my participation in a raw food diet thus far.
Despite being turned off by the books I am still interested in incorporating more raw aspects into my families diet. My eight year old would eat everything raw if it was up to her and hubby is willing to try it out as long as I prepare it. It is all about getting the information in a way that is, shall I say, user friendly and I believe I have finally found my source!
In October of 2011, during Vegan Mofo I posted about a raw “Better Than Ranch” dressing that I found on Uncooking 101. Ever since, I have been following the writer Eva and her raw food adventures. A couple weeks ago she announced that she would be teaching a 21 Day Raw Food Jump Start. The classes were on line and only a few of the days are completely raw.
The class began Monday and tonight will be our first recipe, one I am unfortunately not thrilled about, a green smoothie. I have a difficult time drinking my vegetables especially when there is sludge involved, but I will power through! I will keep you updated on my progress over the next few weeks with this adventure!
Okay, this piece is called Vegans Say What, not Steffi Says What! I wrote this wondering if you have had any experience with a raw food diet? If you have gone raw and stopped, why? What are your favorite raw food recipes? Have you considered going raw and if so what is keeping you from making the plunge? Lastly, I am really into comfort food (if you can’t tell by my recipes) and I am not sure you can get that same satisfaction out of raw foods, what do you think?
Thanks for reading!
It is difficult to maintain… at least for now. I still take it one day at a time. My fav is marinated kale and a delicious raw lemon hummus dressing. I have found it easier to be vegan (im a former meat eater) , but still trying daily to consume more raw 🙂
My work week is pretty crazy with an average of less than 10 hours per shift so I haven’t been able to figure out how to manage the time to prep even the smoothies. I may just have to eat raw fruits and vegetables. 🙂
i’ll be interested to hear how you get on – especially with that green smoothie!
Still haven’t been able to work it in! Hopefully tomorrow!!
I love raw food, but I don’t try to stick to any particular percentage. I have green juices or smoothies for breakfast several times a week, and think they’re delicious, but it did take me some time to build up to the level of greens that I put in mine now. Start slow! It will grow on you. 🙂
And I know it’s not feasible for everyone, but a Vitamix is a life-changing appliance and well worth the investment. It’s my favorite thing in my gadget-heavy kitchen. No more sludgy smoothies!
We love our Vitamix but it doesn’t get rid of the sludge. I was able to start drinking green juice, I know I can get through this!
